Russia’s Thawing Permafrost: A Silent Climate Crisis with Global Impacts

In the frozen northern regions of the planet lies permafrost — soil and rock that remain frozen for at least two consecutive years. Russia possesses the largest share of this frozen ground, with nearly two-thirds of its territory resting upon permafrost. This icy layer plays a vital role in maintaining Arctic ecosystems, regulating temperatures, and storing ancient organic material.

However, rising global temperatures are triggering dramatic changes. The once-permanent frost is beginning to thaw, unlocking massive amounts of greenhouse gases and unleashing risks that stretch far beyond Russia’s borders.
